A time to bring attention to the challenges faced by individuals living with this progressive and often debilitating lung disease.

Pulmonary fibrosis is a disorder in which the lung tissues scar, stiffening the lungs and making breathing more difficult. The condition progresses, causing significant respiratory problems and a lower quality of life. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), the most frequent type of PF, has no recognised cause or treatment. Treatment options are limited, and the illness is still difficult to control without early identification and medical assistance.

Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month, held in September, aims to raise awareness about pulmonary fibrosis (PF) and interstitial lung disorders (ILDs). The theme of 2024 is “Every Breath, Every Story.” This theme focusses on sharing the personal experiences of individuals affected by PF, including as patients, care givers, healthcare professionals, and loved ones. These stories encourage and mobilise the community to raise awareness, educate others, and support research initiatives.

While there is no cure for fibrosis, in light of community action, advocacy, and research, Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month serves as a reminder that there is hope for a future in which this condition might be better treated and perhaps even cured.
